If you share your home with a dog or cat, you already know that pet odor has a way of settling deep into carpet fibers and padding — long after the mess itself is gone. Air fresheners only mask the smell. To actually get rid of it, you need to break down the odor-causing bacteria and residue trapped in the fibers.

Here’s the process our team follows for residential cleanings.

1. Blot, Don’t Rub

If you’re treating a fresh accident, blot up as much moisture as possible with a clean towel first. Rubbing pushes the mess deeper into the padding underneath, which makes the smell much harder to remove later.

2. Use an Enzyme Cleaner

Regular carpet shampoo won’t cut it for pet odor. Enzyme-based cleaners are formulated to break down the proteins in urine and other organic residue that cause the smell in the first place.

  • Saturate the affected area generously — the solution needs to reach the same depth the accident did.
  • Let it sit for the time listed on the product (usually 10–15 minutes).
  • Blot dry with a clean towel; avoid steam cleaning immediately after, since heat can set residual odor.

3. Deodorize With Baking Soda

Once the area is dry, sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda over the spot and let it sit for a few hours (overnight is even better). Baking soda absorbs any remaining odor molecules. Vacuum thoroughly afterward.

4. Deep Clean the Whole Room Periodically

Even with careful spot treatment, pet dander and odor build up gradually across the entire carpet. A full hot-water extraction cleaning every few months keeps the whole room fresh, not just the trouble spots.

When to Call a Professional

If odor persists after treatment, it likely means the padding underneath — or even the subfloor — has absorbed moisture. At that point, DIY treatments won’t reach the source. Our team uses professional-grade extraction equipment and enzyme treatments that penetrate all the way through the carpet system.
